1s CHAMPIONS!!! 2s CHAMPIONS!!! 19s CHAMPIONS!!!
A brilliant day at Bluetoungue started with the Colts overcoming an early try against them to take the title 19-12 over Woy Woy. The younger players had previously won Junior titles in 07, 05 & 03 - and the older players in 06, 05, 04 & 03. Its a squad full of talent and Nugget, (with the help of Grant Russell and Mick Murphy) made sure they got the result to match. Next the 3rds where we can claim some honours as Scott Bath who coaches our u8s played for the winning the Terrigal side. The 2nds gave their supporters a really hard time, conceding a few long range tries that seemed to come every time they appeared to be on top. The final result was 25-21 after Richo kicked a penalty at full time. Four titles in a row the 2s!! The big game started with plenty of huge hits and some wounded Sharks. Experience, talent and sheer class all combined to get the better of the giant Kariong pack. It was a tight game, but the Sharks slowly kept increasing the lead which was at 20-0 until a very late try cut it back to 20-5. 4 in a row for the 1s, 5 out of the last 6 from 7 consecutive grand final appearances!! The team shots of the winners are below, and all of the match photos will be online later in the week

GRAND FINAL WEEK Time for all Sharks supporters to plan a Saturday at Bluetongue Stadium supporting the 1s, 2s and Colts. To make sure you look the part, come down to the Clubhouse on Thursday between 7 & 8pm and purchase a Club polo shirt. Special Grand Final deal has them reduced from $30 to $25 for one night only. We want to have a sea of blue in stands cheering for the Sharks. It is going to be a warm day, so the Club shirt will be the perfect attire! If you already have a Club shirt or jacket, make sure you are wearing it on the day ... The opening game is the Colts and they kick off at 10:15am. Woy Woy surprised Terrigal last week, and for a number of players in both teams this will be a rematch of last years u17s decider. Terrigal take on Ourimbah in the 3rds at 11:45am Then the 2nds kick off at 1:15pm. Kariong won their way into the Grand Final by knocking over the minor premiers Ourimbah last week. The Big Game is off at 3pm. Kariong took out Terrigal last week and like their 2nds have made it through to the Grand final from 3rd place. It is going to be a big day for everyone in the Club, and its a fantastic achievement to make 3 of the 4 grand finals. The players will be doing their best - give them a big turnout of supporters to cheer them on. Go The Sharks!

6-7 Sep Review Last Saturday the 3rds played through some wild weather, but the storm hit them early when ourimbah played great weather football and set up a winning 20-0 lead by 1/2 time. A tight 2nd half saw the final result of 20-5. On Sunday the u11s opened the day on fire and jumped out to a 12-0 lead against a team who had beaten them all season. Terrigal came back hard and at 15-12 loooked safe until a great try near the finish jumped the Sharks to a 17-15 lead. Then the heartbreak of a penalty after full time, a tap & run and a try to Terrigal knocked out the incredibly brave and skilful 11s.

6 Sep Preview
This Saturday has 2 teams fighting to join the 1s 2s and Colts in Grand Finals. At Ourimbah at 8:30 its the u11s taking on Terrigal. This very wet windy weather will be new to boys but they have enough talent to make it through no matter what the conditions. Then if all goes well Dave Upcroft will back from coaching the 11s with Cam Stewart, to being part of the 3s as they try to knock Ourimbah out of the Finals and make it all 4 Senior teams at Bluetongue the following Saturday. That game kicks off at 11:50. Dave is having a hard time coming to terms with an ill-informed reporter calling him a "veteran" in the local paper and will surely be at his dazzling best to prove he is still young man with plenty of games to play before he is sighted on the Golden Oldies trips away. Lets get plenty of supporters out to both games, a little bit of rain shouldnt stop you cheering on the Sharks, the very young and the not so young. Go The Sharks! |
30 Aug review good news - u14s player Nathan 'Pixie' Pickup xrayed ok and is home from hospital
3 teams straight into the grand final! Well done to the 1s, 2s & Colts who all had strong wins in their major semi-finals. The 11s won the first game of the day against Woy Woy and they'll be playing next week, with the 3s, for a shot at the Grand Finals. It was an unlucky day for the u14s who put in a huge defensive effort but couldnt get over the top of Woy Woy. Photos of the games are now available and can be accessed through each team's page. |
30 Aug Preview This Saturday combines Senior major semi-finals with Junior minor semi-finals to give a full days viewing to all Avoca supporters. The day kicks off at Kariong with the u11s starting at 8:30. Cam Stewart & Dave Upcroft have been doing a great job with the boys and they are starting the final drive of their "Road to Bluetongue". Then head back down the hill (and Woy Woy Rd is open again!) to Woy Woy Oval and you'll get to see Nugget's Colts take on Terrigal starting at 10:20. Many of the boys have had a taste of Grade this year and are fired up and ready to show they were worthy minor premiers. Up the hill again for the u14s kicking off at 11:50, and you'll probably be passed on the way by Sherro, Dylan & Beetle racing from the Colts game to fire their boys up to take on Woy Woy in a repeat of last year's Grand Final - we are quietly confident that they can repeat that winning result. One last time down the hill for the big boys. The 2s take on Ourimbah at 1:20 before the 1s face Terrigal at 3:00. As always the Sharks are coming into strong form at the right end of the season, and it would be a fantastic day if we can get both teams straight into the Grand Final. Thats a full day of exciting Rugby, make sure you see as much of it as you can - the trip to Kariong isn't far and the younger Sharks will respond to any extra support they can get from the sidelines ... BE THERE!! Go The Sharks! |
23 AUGUST REVIEW Congratulations to the 3rds! In a tough game they claimed the minor semi 19-3. The Entrance tried everything - including kissing and hair pulling before Pav copped a liverpool kiss as the last act of the battle. Saturday started at Ettalong where the youngest Sharks finished off their season with some great games. The 7s and 9s had double headers for twice the fun. The 8s ran in a big score, followed by an impressive presentation ceremony from Scott Bath that left all the boys beaming! Next stop was Gosford where the 10s had a draw that didnt affect their finishing spot of 2nd in a first past the post competition. The 11s had a good win, while the 12s started strongly and competed all the way against Kariong. The 14s followed on last weeks close loss woth a big win against the minor premiers. The boys are hitting form at the right end of the season. Sunday was the chance to play the washed games from round 4. Unfortuantely many opponents couldnt get teams together and only 3 teams got a game. Up at Warnervale the 11s had a rugged game that finished in a draw. The 14s kept on playing well with a big win to nil. Then at Gosford the final game of the regular season, and the final game in the Juniors for our 17s. The boys have had a hard year, but keep coming back and showing the skills that will take them far in their senior years, when the extra discipline will keep them switched on for a full game instead of small patches of brilliance. The result went against the boys, but Kariong knew they were in a tough game and had to keep defending right to the end. Next weekend is major semis for seniors and both semis for juniors .. |
23 AUGUST PREVIEW Senior semi-final start this weekend! It is minor semi final day at Woy Woy and the Thirsty Thirds kickoff at 11:50. The team had a fantastic 2nd half of the season and worked their way to =2nd, only missing the major semi due to for and against standings. Next Saturday it will be the turn of the 1s, 2s and Colts in the Major semis. The Juniors finish their normal season with some teams also backing up to play a catch up game on Sunday. Saturday starts at Ettalong with the 7s, 8s and 9s playing their final games for the year. The little Sharkies have had a wonderful time under the care of 3 fantastic coaches, and it has been great to watch the increase in their skills as the season has progressed. Then it is over to Gosford where the 10s play Kariong at 9:50 and will finish the eyar in 2nd place, the 11s play Gosford and the 12s also have Kariong. A short break and then the 14s face the The Entrance at 1pm for the 2nd time in a week. On Sunday the 11s and the 14s travel to Warnervale to play the home team. The 12s return to Gosford this time playing Northlakes. Then the big boys take over and the 16s meet Woy Woy at 1:10 followed by the 17s against Kariong. It is the final Junior game for the 17s, and we thank them for all the games they have played over the years. In the 16s, its a chance to finish an unlucky year with a victory, and Brad Mitchell will be running on for his 100th Junior game as a Shark. Get to Woy Woy for the 3rds and try to see a few Junior games as well, there will be plenty of excitement whichever team you watch! Go The Sharks!! |
16 AUGUST REVIEW CLUB CHAMPIONS!! (** late news: Jenko has lodged a match report for the 2s, his work is always a great read, check it out) The results from Saturday confirmed a win in the Senior Club Championship, getting the result over Terrigal by 656 points to 655. Well done to all the Grade and Colts players for a strong performance during the rounds. The 1sts wrapped up the Minor Premiership with a 48-7 win over Gosford, 2nds had a 40-0 win which consolidated their 2nd place finish in the Minor Premiership. 3rds opened up the day with a sensational performance to run a big 91-0 scoreline, but even that wasn't able to improve their their semi-final position of 4th even though they finished =2nd in the points table. Colts had the bye and had already secured the Minor premiership. Earlier in the day Ourimbah teams both scored right on full-time to snatch victories. The 9s started the day having only lost games to Ourimbah, who were undefeated. A try in the 2nd half had our boys almost home before a last minute converted try did the damage 5-7. The u17s took 10 minutes to wake up and when they did they were 17-0 down in a match to decide who'd finish in 4th place. They started to make some tackles and battled back brilliantly to get it to 24-24 with 5 minutes left. There was a big crowd cheering them all the way and the fightback had been successful, until a penalty after full time gave possession to Ourimbah who scored wide out to wrap it up. Over at gosford the 14s continued their improvement with an 8-14 loss to the competition leaders, they led most of the way and its a good warm up for the semis. The 13s also faced competition leaders and were low on numbers but fought all the way. Also the 12s were against a hot team and needing help from the 11s to get a full squad together they tackled all day but couldnt quite manage to grab a try. The 11s had another good win and are regaining their early season strong form. The early game at Gosford was another close loss for Avoca boys with a late try to Gosford breaking an even scoreline. The 9s picked up wins in both legs of their tri-game against Woy Woy & Terrigal. While up at Northlakes the 7s had a great time against their favourite opponents with a fittingly drawn result. Seniors now move on to semis, while Juniors have this coming weekend before the finals series kicks off. |
16 AUGUST PREVIEW It is the last round of Seniors with home games against Gosford, and every one of them is important to the Club. First Grade are leading the premiership table, but need a win to confirm that position. 2nds are running 2nd, but need a win to take a position in the major semi final. Keeping the sequence up, 3rds are currently =3rd, and need a win to stay safe in the semi finals. Colts have the bye and have already wrapped up the minor premiership. The big battle of the day is in the Club Championship. If Terrigal win all grades as expected at The Haven, all 3 of our teams need to win with 4 tries to gain bonus points. If that plays out, The Sharks will win the Club Championship by ONE point. So get to Heazlett early to cheer on all 3 Grades on this very important day. Prior to Grade the 17s kick off at 11:20, in a game against Ourimbah that will determine which team take the final spot available in the semi. The 10s kick off the day at 10:30 taking on the only team who has beaten them all year, Ourimbah. The boys will be trying hard to get the better of them this time. The 7s and 9s are in action at Ettalong. All other teams are at Gosford, with the 8s and 11s playing the home team. The 12s against Terrigal. The 13s take on Woy Woy Red and the 14s finish the day against the competition leading The Entrance team. Good luck to all the Sharks! |
9 AUGUST REVIEW The trip to Warnervale was a very successful one for the Senior Grades. The Colts started the day with a big win against Terrigal that confirmed they would be Minor premiers for 2008, congratulations to the boys who have also done a lot to help out the Grades during the year. The Thirsty Thirds kept on their winning ways with a 50-0 result. 2nds couldnt quite match that with a 41-0 victory. In the 1sts it was another big score of 109-0. Noticeable absences from the try scoring list were the 16s & 17s coaches H and Josh - which wouldnt have improved their day after both those teams started proceedings at Warnervale with losses. After the games the Warnervale Club were great hosts and the bus ride home may not have been the quickest and most direct trip to Avoca. Juniors were hosting Warnervale in all ages apart from the 7s who had a good run against the strong Entrance team. The 8s drew with Warnervale and had a win against Terrigal in the 2nd leg of their tri-game. There was some goal kicking by the boys and they'll be ready for next year when the conversion stay on the scoresheet. The 10s were at Ettalong playing Woy Woy for the 3rd time in a row and they have improved the result each week, finishing with a 55-0 victory. Cam & Dave's 11s got back onto the "road to bluetongue" with a classy 44-0 win that had 7 different try scorers. The 12s were up against a much bigger team, but kept right with them for most of the game. The handling when the backs ran the ball was fantastic and they never stopped looking for a chance to score. It was an even tougher task for the 13s, Warnervale are leading the comp and have backs that are big, fast and skillful and wouldnt be out of place a couple of age groups higher. As always our boys tackled their hearts out and were just as involved at full time as they were at kickoff. With only 15 players and no reserves thats a huge effort. The final game had the 14s consolidate their good form of last week with a 22-12 win, they are working back into good form with the semi finals not too far away. Sunday was the Golden Oldies Gala Day, which had the White Pointers hosting an event that started off like a tv medical show. Woodsy & Frank and even Sam Fortey dragged out of the crowd were needed to patch up the old warriors and get them back onto the field. The cold weather probably didnt help and it took a while for the port to warm them all up. Thanks to Kerrie Yates, Deb Rendall & Don Anderson for coming down to help out the Goffo by working at the canteen & BBQ, maybe next year a few more helpers will donate some of their time. Photos from the day can be found by clicking here. |
9 AUGUST PREVIEW This is the last saturday of Junior games at Heazlett for the season, with all games against Warnervale except for the 7s who are playing The Entrance. The day starts at the usual 7:50 and the 14s finish the day when they kick off at 12:35. Also at Heazlett but on Sunday, the fine old gentlemen of the Golden Oldies are playing from 10:30 to 2:00. These are the men who contribute so much to Junior Rugby at Avoca and it would be great if parents of Juniors came down to the game and helped out for a bit on the canteen or bbq. Up at Warnervale the Senior teams will be hunting a strong hitout before next week's final competition round. Even though it has been a tough year for Warnervale, the Sharks need bonus point wins to keep the Club Championship battle with Terrigal alive. So all 3 grades will be playing hard to the finish. The 16s open the day at 9am, followed by the 17s - both these teams have been playing good Rugby recently and win away would be a great reward. The Colts play Terrigal also at Warnervale and with this too a must-win game. Good Luck to all the Sharks, and lets have lots of spectators cheering on the younger ages for the last time this year.

2 AUGUST REVIEW Firstly, the very good news - Junior players Matt Ritchie, Nick Kemp and Zac McGowan have no serious injuries and were home on Saturday night. Thanks to all our first aid helpers for the professional manner they cared for the injured boys. Over at Woy Woy the Seniors had a clean sweep. 1sts were in sharp form with a 100-0 victory. 2nds are getting closer to a top-2 finish with their 63-0 win while 3rds also grabbed a bonus point with a 31-12 result. Colts held off a strong fightback to take a 22-17 win. The day started with the 17s taking a while to get into the match, but came back strongly to just miss out 19-26 against Ourimbah White. At Heazlett it was great day of Junior Rugby, with Avoca and Woy Woy sharing the games. In the final match the 16s did it again, put their heart into a hard match against a bigger Ourimbah team. Best result was the 14s rediscovering their form from last season and turning an 0-38 result last week into a 5-5 draw - brilliant work boys. The 13s had their best win of the season, they keep putting in every week and really deserved that result. It was a day of many highlights, most them not captured on camera as i was too busy cheering. In the 8s there was big Benny Mitchell charging from half way only to miss a try by a metre when pushed into touch. In the 10s Joel Hoban backed up from the 9s for his first game on a full length field and found himself on the end of a perfectly weighted cross-kick from Matt Kenyon for a brilliant try. Tackle of the day was Luke Yates in the 14s - the big Woy Woy #8 had got through the defence and was charging downfield, but Luke stood his ground, took him head on and slowed him down for the cover defence to get across and close down the movement. The gutsiest moment was late in the day. The 16s had a tap penalty and the forwards lined up facing the giant Ourimbah pack, Alex Tomlin took the ball and didnt just run it up , he attacked the defenders. The impact was incredible yet he made ground and kept possession for the movement to continue. Fantastic play. Well done to All the Sharks this week! |
